Keyword Research Guide: Part 2

Here’s part 2 of the Keyword Research guide.

#1 The Importance of Keyword Search Volume

If you want to obtain significant sales, it’s a good idea to focus on keywords with a high search volume. Usually this means keywords that have been searched for at least 100 times in the past month. Focusing on these terms is the first step of any successful campaign. You can always go back and add less frequently searched terms to your keyword portfolio.

#2 The Top 2 Free Keyword Research Tools I Use

The most useful keyword tool is the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. This tool allows you to see if a keyword gets a significant search volume. It will also show you related keywords. By clicking the “Site-Related Keywords” tab, Google will scan your competitor’s website and pick out and group relevant keywords.

The second tool I use is the Word Tracker Free Keyword Suggestion Tool. This tool gives you the top 100 most searched for terms related to any keyword.

#3 Using Google Trends To Identify Potential Markets

If you aren’t familiar with Google Trends, you are missing out. The tool allows you to see historical trends in search volume for the past several years on the Google search engine. For example, if you type in “Christmas”, you will see a sharp spike in December.

You can also use Google Trends to see which particular cities have the highest search volume for a particular keyword. Just click on the country to drill down further.

#4 Applying the 80/20 Rule to Keyword Research

The 80/20 Rule states that 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. This can be applied to almost any industry. For keyword research, we can say that 80% of our sales will come from 20% of our keywords. This is why it’s important to spend most of your time focusing on the terms with the highest search volume and creating landing pages for these terms. Although, we shouldn’t forget about the rest of the keywords entirely.
