All successful persuasive attempts are built on an understanding of consumer behavior. Changes in consumer attitudes, and more importantly, purchase behavior do not occur unless a marketer understands the needs, thoughts, and behaviors of its prospective clients. There are a few ways in which one goes about identifying those needs, thoughts, and behaviors. One would be to ask consumers directly. Another one would be to observe their behaviors along with the contexts in which those behaviors occur. Yet another would be to deduce it based on data collected on the marketer’s end (e.g., sales and traffic data). Neither one of these methods guarantees perfect results, but they can complement each other quite well. At the same time, these methods (especially direct observation) can be difficult to pursue and the resulting data difficult to interpret. The online medium makes a marketer’s job somewhat easier in this sense, given that online users leave visible trails of their behavior.
